The Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue Association is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization committed to saving human life, preventing injuries to persons, and aiding in the preservation of public and private property by means of search, rescue, and public education.

LCSAR reports to, and supports the operations of the Sheriff of Lewis and Clark County. Typical missions include:

  • Locating and retrieving missing persons;
  • Rapid response rescues on land, water, ice and snow;
  • Provide first response care to persons injured or ill in the backcountry;
  • Evidence searches;
  • Evacuation management, and
  • Rescue and medical support for local community events (like the Mt. Helena Run and the Passion Plunge --an annual event where crazed Helenan's jump into frozen Spring Meadow Lake to benefit the Special Olympics).

Finally, LCSAR provides command and communication support for multi-agency emergency operations such as wildfires, manhunts and mass disasters.
